Make the Most of the Event

We want you to get a lot out of this outstanding event. In order to help, here are some resources and tips to ensure you make the most of the opportunity to connect with alumni.

Before the Event
Networking for Beginners Workshop
4:00 PM Tuesday, January 31 in the Career Education Center
This workshop will provide a safe place to learn how to network and will give you resources to get started. No RSVP necessary.

Networking Webinar
Available at the Alumni Career Services Web site
The key to success is building close relationships and friendships with the people we really feel connected to. This webinar will show you how much fun you can have by networking the easy way. You'll walk away with the tools to create a simple and effective "elevator speech" that helps you attract the right people and opportunities to you effortlessly. Presented by Talane Miedaner (SFS’87, GRD'89), Master Certified Coach, founder of LifeCoach.com and international bestselling author of Coach Yourself to Success, The Secret Laws of Attraction, and the recently released, Coach Yourself to A New Career (all McGraw-Hill).

Read Alumni Bios
Prior to the event, you will receive bios for the participating alumni. Please review them so you have an idea of which alums you hope to connect with first. In an attempt to be save paper, we will not provide many copies of the bios on the day of the event. We encourage you to print out the bios and bring them with you.

During the Event
Attire
Because this is an opportunity for you to make connections with successful alumni, business professional attire is required. Although this is a fun event, you will want to dress as though it were an interview.

Event Format
Alumni will be strategically placed throughout the Fisher Colloquim based on their industry area. You will be provided with a map to assist you in finding alumni. You are encouraged to seek out alumni in the industries that you are interested in learning more about.

Helpful Talking Points
We suggest that you use this event as an opportunity to learn from alumni and that you come prepared with some general informational questions to stimulate the discussion. Samples of some questions that we recommend at the Career Education Center are listed below:
• What has been your career path from college to the present?
• What are commonly used titles for positions within the field?
• What are the duties performed in a typical day? Week? Month? Year?
• What kinds of courses are most valuable to gain skills necessary for success in this occupation?
• What kind of work internship experiences do employers look for?
• What steps besides education and experience are necessary to “break into” this field?
• What are the most important personal characteristics for success in the field?
• What entry-level positions are there in this field and where are new job listings found?
• What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?
• What are the greatest pressures, strains, or anxieties in the work?
• How would you describe the environment/culture of the work place?
• Who else would be a valuable source of information?

After the Event
Show Appreciation
If you are given a business card and are asked to follow up, please do. If you have a great connection with an alum and have their contact information, be sure to send a quick message of thanks for their time and advice.
