When does OCI begin?
The first week of on-campus interviews is September 25. The résumé drop (résumé submission period) for these interviews is September 4-10. On-campus interviews run from September 25- November 17 (with a few exceptions), with résumé drops September 4-October 29. On-campus intervewing positions are linked to a résumé drop period (a set number of days during which you may submit a résumé). It is important that you are mindful of all deadlines. For on-campus interviewing positions, résumé submissions begin at 12:01 AM on the résumé submission start date and end at 11:59 PM on the résumé submission end date. No exceptions will be made to these deadlines. Once you have attended a workshop you will be able to view exact dates related to the positions for which you are applying. Prior to attending an on-campus interviewingworkshop, you can see approximate résumé deadlines from your Hoya Career Connection calendar. All on-campus interviewing procedures will be explained during the on-campus interviewing workshop.
Do I need to do anything before I can participate in on-campus interviewing?
Yes. All students must attend a mandatory on-campus interviewing workshop to submit résumés for on-campus interviewing positions. A list of all upcoming workshops is available on your Hoya Career Connection calendar.
If I attended the on-campus interviewing workshop last year do I need to attend again?
No. As long as you attended an on-campus interviewing workshop during the 2005-2006 academic year you do not need to attend this year.
What companies typically recruit through on-campus interviewing?
Companies participating in on-campus interviewing tend to be in industries that can predict hiring needs 6 to 12 months in advance. Therefore, many large financial, accounting and consulting firms heavily recruit through on-campus interviewing. This trend is true across all schools and not just at Georgetown. However, on-campus interviewing is not limited to finance or consulting jobs. For example, last year over 26 government, nonprofit, education, healthcare and retail employers recruited through on-campus interviewing.
Why doesn’t the industry I am interested in recruit through on-campus interviewing?
To benefit from on-campus interviewing, employers must be able to predict a standard hiring need 6 to 12 months in advance and have the human and financial capital to travel to recruit at campuses across the country. For many industries this is not a practical or cost effective interviewing strategy. If you are interested in an industry that does not recruit through on-campus interviewing, check out our Web site for more information about hiring timelines and industry specific resources or come into the Career Education Center to make an appointment to meet with an advisor who specializes in your field.
What should I do if my target employer does not recruit through on-campus interviewing?
If you are interested in employers or industries that do not recruit through on-campus interviewing, the Career Education Center may still have resources to assist you. Come in for a walk-in appointment (same day, 15- minute appointment with an advisor or counselor) to discuss additional resources. Also check out these resources.
Is on-campus interviewing the only way to get a job?
Of course not! OCI is a terrific resource and a great opportunity to have employers come to you, but it is not the only way to get a job. Stop by the Career Education Center to learn more about additional job search options.
Wow. A lot of my classmates seem to have jobs and it’s only October, should I be concerned?
Not necessarily. For many industries it is highly unlikely you would be hired 9 months before your start date. For example, many creative fields like advertising and public relations hire on a need-based schedule, which means that they hire when there is an immediate need/position to be filled. In these fields you will be hired fairly close to the time you actually will be able to start. On the other hand, investment banks and some government agencies may have completed their hiring processes 6 months in advance. Hiring is very industry specific, which is why it’s important to make sure you are on the correct timeline for your industry - regardless of your classmates.
How can I view a list of all organizations who are interviewing this semester and their résumé drop deadlines?
To see a list of all companies interviewing this semester, log on to Hoya Career Connection and click on the "jobs" tab. Then select "Show me: all on-campus interviewing positions." You will be able to view the dates companies are coming to campus to interview. Résumé drops typically begin 3 weeks before the interview. All résumé drop dates and employer interview dates (interview schedules) are also available on your Hoya Career Connection calendar. To access the most current dates for a specific position, check the job description for that position, (you must have attended an on-campus interviewing workshop to see these details).
A lot of companies have information sessions, what are these? Are they required?
Information sessions are a tool employers use to teach you more about their company. Typically employers have their sessions before their résumé submission deadline (though some employers will have them the night before the interview). While they are not required, they are an excellent opportunity to learn more about the employer and, more importantly, to network with representatives from the company. Information sessions are your opportunity to have an employer connect a face with a name—take advantage.
Can I participate in on-campus interviewing if I will be abroad?
Students who attended an on-campus interviewing workshop prior to going abroad will have access to on-campus interviewing while abroad. Make sure you specify on your résumé and cover letter that you are currently studying abroad. If you will be abroad for Spring 2007, remember that you must attend an on-campus interviewing workshop prior to leaving Georgetown. No exceptions will be made.
